Emoji Soft Sculptures (5th)

I started this tutorial by giving a PowerPoint presentation depicting the pop art movement and some of its best artists. I really emphasize that pop artists want to communicate with ordinary people, so their subject matter reflects the pop culture of the time (movie stars, advertising, comics, food, etc.). People see the work, understand it and interact with it (big difference with abstract expression).
Then today we started talking about things that are common in our culture, which of course led us to talk about iPods, iPads, video games, Instagram, Facebook, SMS and many other applications. I'm sure I wasn't cold enough to know this. Care. It's so hard not to even know what your students are saying. I know everything.
I also explained that pop art emoji examples are very common and useful in this age of tech genius.
We then looked at different emojis and talked about what they mean. Then I asked the students what it means to use them in a different context.
So, for example, one eye is closed, one is expressive. My students immediately say that it means "crazy". Then I thought about what it means to write "I hate you." The words sound cruel and painful, but when they are sent with emoji, they become a myth. They certainly don't want to be taken seriously.
Emotions can help convey the meaning of the words, as in the previous picture, or they can be used as an interesting decoration.
As an audiovisual specialist, I believe that art educators are in a unique position in teaching our students the power of this type of imagery—their effectiveness in conveying a more meaningful message.
After talking about emoji, we started talking about what soft sculpture means. I tell my students that using an emoji thread will create soft emoji on both sides.
My friends have to say that I love it. I was working on an Angry Birds expansion project with 5th graders, but this year I decided to turn things around so that the project works for my students. You are crazy about this course.

Before I decided to make emoji (the decision was made before lunch), I planned to make Minecraft Soft Sculpture with my kids. If you are interested in the course , check it out in my shop . :)
