Celebrating Tanderrum

It was a privilege to be part of the team that rebuilt Thunderroom and an even greater privilege to remember its importance when we gathered to celebrate the reopening on January 26th. The name of the work was inspired by the welcome ceremony celebrated by William Thomas in the 1840s. A transcript of his letter is available on the Friends of Herring Island website: http://home.vicnet.net.au/~herring/arts.htm We remind you that the form of the work derives from two sources of inspiration:
  • A five stone ceremony donated by five Kulin language groups: Woiwurrung, Ammorong, Tuanqurong, Ngurai-illam-wurrung and Wautarong; Mount William Greenstone - sold across eastern Australia; and the flying form of the Bunjil in general.
  • Another source of inspiration is the ironic reference to the White Monument of Australia: Castlemaine's collected slate is reminiscent of many monuments across the country.
